Updated Dec 14 2008: link for Ruby Shootout

Some useful links.

Some good advice from railshosting.org about setting up Rails in a shared hosting environment, and Rails hosting in general.

See Hosting a Ruby On Rails Application on HostMonster.Com in 8 very easy steps, answering such burning reader questions as:

  • Do I need SSH ( Linux secure shell ) ? Yes.
  • Do I need FASTCGI ? Don't worry about it.
  • Can I mess up the rest of my site ? Yes, if you don't watch out !

[Oct 12: Maybe FastCGI is OK for Ruby on a dedicated host, but I had to turn the sucker off this morning to get my PHP running again !]

Ruby IDEs

A link to to NetBeans based on for Java with an interesting IDE for Ruby and many other languages. It is similar to the Eclipse IDE for Ruby ( Windows only ), although I don't understand the relationship between it and RadRails on Sourceforge.com and the RadRails Eclipse Plug-in by Aptana.com, not to mention the EasyEclipse package of plug-ins for Ruby - they are related somehow.

Eric4 has some Ruby capabilities, but seems to be primarily a Python IDE. I'm not 100% sure I have it configured correctly - will need to revisit ...

Just a small test of Swiki Search for Rails. The GUI editor mangles the Javascript, not surprisingly. Are the results worth it ?
