[...] Source:Mashable! A content management system, or CMS, is the easiest way to get a content driven site up and running fast. Frequently, they’re also used for building social networks. We’ve rounded up more than 80 popular CMSs due to reader requests. For the sake of brevity, we haven’t delved too deeply into CMSs […] Share and Enjoy:These icons link to social bookmarking sites where readers can share and discover new web pages. [...]

I’ve drunk the Drupal kool-aid — it’s a great system, which my organization uses for a wide range of websites. I use it for my personal sites as well.

Not the easiest CMS to get up and running, although that’s gotten much better with the latest release. And for those who are overwhelmed by the hundreds of add-on modules, here’s a very subjective list of the “gotta-haves”: http://troyschneider.com/blog/31/drupal-5-modules-you-simply-cant-live-without

I’m surprise Joomla is at the top of your list.

I commissioned some research from Birmingham University to find out what the best open-source CMS was and they came back with Joomla as a recommendation.

However, when I worked on a project that implemented it I found it heavy, slow, buggy, over-javascripted, non standards-compliant, completely impossible to edit using a Mac (10 seconds and three clicks to add an inline text link), locked me out of pages I was editing, didn’t have XML-RPC support and the plugins that the developers used seemed to ruin the usability of the site rather than enhance it.

Within three months the guy I was employing to write content for the site had _quit_ because his experience of using the system was awful in comparison to something like Wordpress/Typepad/ExpressionEngine.

Without improvements on all of these fronts I don’t recommend it at all. Even for “it must be open source” clients I recommend using our in-house system instead.

Is the high ranking just Wisdom of Crowds or have you tested before recommending?

I would have to 2nd Stef’s comments regarding Joomla… though a fantastic and featureful CMS - the lack of compliant/standardization as well as the over-weighted javascripting has been a burden to the few projects I have used it for. For “legacy” style web sites (table based), it has been very useful - when clients have requested (or I have simply tried) to implement XHTML compliant templates there have been limited modules which can accomodate.

I have also implemented DotNetNuke for several sites, and have enjoyed the framework very much. I really look forward to the enhancements which are possible in future releases of the framework.

Joomla isn’t easy for noobs but its a very powerful CMS. It has the largest community, the most pre-made templates(both free and paid), and add on scripts to do anything you want with it.
